Perry has the father of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) Her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Her parents, however, did not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood, for fear of the negative effects that stress could affect their child. Perry shy and timid to perform in the high school, started to act in the theater at Northwestern University because she wanted to make new friends. Perry left for New York, where she got small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness caused Perry back to California and theater roles were in demand. She appeared on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in 2013. She performed with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's show The Family. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. In the same year, she was cast as the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's character. She was cast in the role in an audition that was open despite being connected to the character.
